A seaside town in Crete, Almyrida has  snorkelling, a small harbour, tavernas, shops, windsurfing, sailing, boat trips and blue flag beaches.

Picturesque villages  at hand, fabulous beaches, views of the white  mountains (lefka ori)  and a great climate make Almyrida a favourite summer vacation  resort.
Two shallow sandy beaches with crytal clear turquiose water make it suitable for small children.

There are the recently dicovered tombs of a 5th century church with mosaics at the west entrance to the village. It is also here  that the last struggle between the greek revolutionaries and the turks  happened in 1896. Kokkino hori was the village wear Zorba the Greek was filmed and is situated close to Almyrida. Close by there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and  traditional villages with great tavernas. There is also an  interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including  glass blowing in kokkino horio, lace makers in gavalohori, and silk  makers in kalamitsi.

Also worth a visit is Chania the historic former capital of Crete, only 35 minutes away by car.

The village of Almyrida is overlooked by the ruins of the ancient city  of Aptera to the West which is well worth a visit.
Nearbye there are isolated, little known, small beaches, for intance  koutalas, with its sea-caves waiting to be found.

In the beachside cafes and tavernas, you will find fiendly service as well as delicious locally sourced and cooked food There are minimarkets and other local shops should you wish to stay in and cook in your villa.
For a family orientated place that your kids will love, and you will be able to unwind, Almyrida is the ideal place.  In fact, many of the visitors of  almyrida return year after year.
Almyrida is the ideal place to unwind and unstress, do nothing but  savor the local tavernas and beaches.

Alternatively with access to the main highway only minutes away by  car you are perfectley positioned to use it as a base from which to  explore the rest of Crete.

Almyrida is situated inbetween Chania and Rethymno both of which have  beautiful old venetian quaters and harbours, boat trips, taveranas,  museums and other historical sites.

The south coast of Crete is easily accessable from Almyrida with many more stunning beaches and historic sites, Knossos and other archeolgical sites are acessable from the main highway.
Consider renting a villa in this area and having the luxury of space  and privacy with your own private swimming pool, no timetable and all for the  same price as a decent hotel. The villa owners will only be too pleased to share their expert local knowledge of the area, best beaches, tavernas etc
